Shrove Tuesday is usually a final frivolous frolic before the serious reflection of the season of Lent. Our congregation was to gather this evening, but, the weather has prevented it. We were all looking forward to this chance to feast on pancakes and celebrate our togetherness.
Each year, we cheer one another during the pancake flipping contest, walk in circles to the music as we compete for the choicest cakes, and just enjoy a chance to laugh and play before Lent. It’s always one of the most joyful gatherings we have.
I was going stir crazy yesterday while we waited out this latest round of snow. In that state of delirium, I started to reflect on Lent’s approach, while all the while a song was stuck in my ear. It was “Let It Go,” from the Disney movie Frozen.
That combination prompted me to join the masses by creating a Lenten version of that wildly popular song. Chalk it up to Shrove Tuesday silliness.
My plan was to surprise the congregation with this song at the Shrove Tuesday evening of pancakes and fun. I was going to call a great time group of children and others from the church to join me in singing it. I even had worked up some choreography that would have been simply stunning.
But as everyone is snowed in and I had no access to real musicians or editors, I simply offer this call for myself to keep a holy Lent. And remember that forgiveness is one of the called for Lenten disciplines.
